Did you know that there are more than 25 different home languages at King’s School?
From Afrikaans to Mandarin, Italian to Panjabi, Polish to Welsh, … a number of pupils join our school as bilingual. How wonderful!
To mark European Day for Languages this year, Mrs Wiltshire and Mrs McCabe wanted to celebrate this linguistic diversity with the Preparatory School pupils in their assembly. They were lucky to be helped by Markus L., Alina G. and Siddhanth G. from Year 4, as well as three Removes pupils: Narcis CA., Anastasia RA., and Joan AB., whose performances impressed their peers.
Markus, Alina and Siddhanth greeted the audience and spoke about themselves in, respectively, Cantonese, Russian and Nepalese; whilst Narcis and Joan shared Spanish and Chilean poetry – Narcis having chosen a poem written by his mum. The assembly concluded with Anastasia’s performance of Nocturne in E flat major by Chopin, a fellow Polish-French citizen.
All pupils and staff present were encouraged to reflect on this year’s European Day for Languages theme, “Languages for Peace”.
Pupils can now participate in a national competition by creating a poster using symbols, quotes and artwork to convey messages of unity and understanding across different languages (deadline 15th October).
