Pupils in the Removes, along with Sixth Form A-Level historians, attended a workshop with Holocaust Educational Trust educators as part of an innovative programme called “Testimony 360”.

The project involves a digital programme, combining pre-recorded eyewitness testimony with virtual site-based learning. Using Virtual Reality headsets, pupils were able to ask questions of a Holocaust survivor, Manfred Goldberg, a German Jew born in Kassel, who was deported to Riga in 1941, before experiencing time in Stutthof Concentration Camp and undertaking a “death march” before being liberated by soldiers from the British army.

Pupils were able to engage in real-time interactions focusing on Manfred’s experiences, as well as exploring some of the sites and artefacts associated with the Holocaust as they appear today. “Testimony 360” provided pupils with a memorable learning experience, which was all the more timely given the rise of antisemitism in our society.
