The Whole School Eco Council met this week. Nearly 40 staff and pupil members were in attendance for a half-hour session to catch up on the goals and ambitions for each section of the School.

The Prep members went first, explaining how, over the past 10 weeks, they had identified the key people needed to provide input regarding the changes they wanted to see. Using the Independent Schools Portal audit provided by Mr Rivers, they selected their ten favourite or most realistic targets and created a voting system where everyone from Year 4 to Year 8 could have their say. After collecting the data, they announced the three winners: third place was secondary glazing for all school windows; second was automatic (timer) taps for all basins; and first was a new Zen garden space in the Prep School, featuring living memory walls. In their ten-minute slots, the Year 7 pupils explained the voting process and the concept of a Zen garden to the Pre-Prep and Senior School members in a truly impressive exhibition of planning and teamwork.

Next, Mrs MacDonald spoke on behalf of the nearly 30 Pre-Prep members in attendance. We learned how busy the younger members have been with their regular litter picks and fantastic efforts planting in both their indoor and outdoor areas. It was agreed that, where possible, all sectors of the council would like at least one ‘spider plant baby’ and, in return, each member would receive a laser-cut KSR Eco Council Scallop, created from waste acrylic in the Senior School.

Lastly, the Senior School members presented their vision for generating awareness, branding, events and a mural, perhaps in the Main School Yard or Davies Court.

The turnout really emphasised how far this community has grown in just a few years. Exciting things are afoot, improving our environment both inside and outside the School.
