The annual Senior School Christmas Service, the highlight of the school calendar, is a spectacular occasion of light, sound and deep tradition within Rochester Cathedral. Lit by hundreds of flickering candles, the atmosphere was simply magical as the congregation joined in the traditional Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.
The evening began with the Chaplain welcoming the congregation then, from the Lady Chapel, the Senior School Choir began the Introit. The sound, mournful and profound, filled the cavernous space.
The Chaplain then read the Bidding Prayer, addressing the world’s needs and the special fellowship of the School and Cathedral. As this prayer concluded, the ritual of the light began: Prefects and Heads of School kindled the processional candles as the single, crystalline voice of the soloist started the Processional Carol Once in Royal David’s City. As the congregation joined the Choir on the third verse, the grand procession began, led by the Thurifer and Crucifer, the GFS Banner and followed by the Choir.
The heart of the service unfolded through pupil and staff readings, charting the story of salvation from the Fall of Man (The First Lesson) through God’s promises and the prophecies of Isaiah. The Choir offered sublime moments of reflection between the Lessons, from the poignancy of Carl Rütti’s I wonder as I wander to the joyful complexity of Mack Wilberg’s arrangement of Ding, Dong, Merrily On High. The Sixth Lesson recounted the core story: St Luke’s account of the Nativity and of Mary laying her firstborn in a manger.
The true climax of the candlelit tradition arrived during the final congregational carol, sung in glorious Latin: Adeste Fideles. As the beautiful, ancient melody filled the nave, the Chapel Prefect led the lighting of the congregation’s candles. Flame was passed from hand to hand, and just as the music soared, the lights were extinguished. The Cathedral was transformed—a majestic space held only by the flickering, golden light of hundreds of individual candles, representing “the light that is Jesus entering the darkness of our world.”
In the darkness all remained standing. The Principal, beneath the Pulpitum arch and flanked by Candle Servers offering him light, read The Ninth Lesson from St John: “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
After the Choir’s final, reflective Szűz Mária Várja, the Dean gave the Final Blessing. Then, with the thunderous start of the final hymn, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, the lights came on, banishing the darkness. The Choir processed out, and the tradition of the candlelit service came to its close, leaving behind a moment of profound Christmas faith and Christmas spirit.
