Romy in our Lower Fifth, represented King’s at the Medway Rotary Club’s annual ‘Youth Speaks’ competition. Each competitor across the two age categories was given five minutes to talk on a subject close to their heart, to an audience which included families, Rotarians and the Mayor of Medway.
The competitors, all drawn from local secondary schools, spoke on an exciting and diverse range of topics including the power of reading; AI and the threats it poses to art; the importance of bees and the scandal of corporate greed.
Having served as a King’s chorister from the age of nine, and having poured so much time, love and commitment into singing and learning to play the oboe, Romy chose to speak about music, arguing that talent isn’t everything when it comes to achieving success in something you love – it’s the dedication and practice that drive progress.
At 14, Romy must have been the youngest speaker in her age category to compete (most others were Sixth Formers) and she spoke with poise and clarity; we are very proud of her confident and articulate performance.
