World Book Day is fast approaching on Thursday 7th March. Here are some of the exciting things that we have planned at King’s Preparatory School to celebrate all things books!
This year, the theme for World Book Day is ‘Read Your Way.’ It calls on everyone to let go of all pressure and expectations and gives children a choice – and a chance – to enjoy reading for at least 20 minutes every day. The goal is to cultivate a habit of reading for pleasure, where we read books that captivate our imaginations and take us to places we have never been before.
This year, pupils are invited to come to school dressed as a character from a famous or beloved book, or in their pyjamas for bedtime stories. With sustainable living in mind, we would like to encourage pupils to get creative with their costume ideas, raid, trade and upcycle rather than buying something new. Local charity shops are bursting with interesting finds.
In form time, pupils in all year groups will be playing book-themed Blooket quizzes. Google Classroom will once again be filled with competitions, challenges, resources and videos to be enjoyed by everyone over the coming weeks.
House Competition – The Masked Reader!
This year, we are inviting staff to film a short video of themselves reading an extract from a favourite novel, play, or poem. Both their faces and voices will be masked and videos will be uploaded to the World Book Day Google Classroom. Can pupils guess the member of staff and the text? Be on the lookout for subtle clues dropped by partaking members of staff in the build up to World Book Day.
Book Buddies
There will be opportunities throughout the week leading up to World Book Day for pupils in the Preparatory School to read with younger pupils in the Pre-Preparatory School. This will be a fantastic opportunity for pupils to practise their reading aloud skills and share their love of books with their younger peers.
We hope the pupils will enjoy the many exciting opportunities on offer this year and that they will get involved in lots of the activities that are taking place.
