Last week, the Chief Executive of the Cathedral Music Trust visited Rochester as part of his cycling pilgrimage around the country. This leg of the journey was from Canterbury Cathedral to St Paul’s Cathedral via Rochester. Jonathan Mayes, the CEO of the Cathedral Trust, is highlighting the importance of Cathedral Music with a campaign to get UNESCO Living Heritage recognition, and he writes:

“Choral music is one of the UK’s greatest cultural exports, with our many world-class choirs and musicians enjoying an unparalleled global reputation. Gaining UNESCO Living Heritage recognition for English Sacred Choral Music will endorse this view, reinforcing the work of the Trust and of our partners to sustain our living tradition. Achieving UNESCO status will also raise awareness of the wider value of choral and organ music and its place in society as well as highlighting the challenges faced in sustaining this music across the UK. Ultimately, we see this campaign as an initiative which supports further fundraising both at a national level and, critically, locally in each diocese. Everyone who cares about this shared musical tradition is warmly invited to sign the petition in support of the campaign – available on the Cathedral Music Trust website.”
