Local Councillor Simon Curry, the Portfolio-Holder for Climate Change, addressed pupils in Years 7 and 8, detailing the initiatives taken by Medway Council to achieve net-zero. Outlining Medway’s Climate Change Action Plan, Mr Curry, highlighted the many measures to mitigate against increased carbon emissions, including the purchase of a new waste fleet worth £12 million which can be run on bio-fuels and converted to hydrogen fuel.
Mr Curry set his talk against the backdrop of the global crisis on the day that world leaders were meeting in Baku as part of the COP29 conference where the focus was on international efforts to counter rising temperatures and distorted weather patterns. As part of the Futures programme designed to create “factivists” empowered to address Climate Change, Mr Curry’s visit complemented the pupils’ classroom studies and provided a series of fascinating insights.
