The historic nave of Rochester Cathedral provided a magnificent backdrop for this year’s Speech Day and Prize Giving on Saturday, 4 July. The ceremony opened with the National Anthem, followed by an address from Mr John Maas, Chair of Governors, who reflected on the School’s continued growth and future strategic direction. Head of School Charlie Vowls then delivered a moving speech, tracing his own journey as a ‘Lifer’ from Reception all the way to Upper Sixth. He shared fond memories of his time at the school and extended heartfelt thanks to the teachers and families who supported him along the way. In a creative twist, the Principal’s address was structurally set to the wisdom of the song Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen), offering the departing cohort a brilliant blend of pragmatic life advice and sharp wit.
The celebrations continued as pupils took to the stage to be recognised for their academic, sporting and artistic endeavours, interspersed with a stunning clarinet performance by Alex S that made full use of the Cathedral’s acoustics. The School was then privileged to welcome back distinguished Old Roffensian Lord Deben, who delivered a powerful and inspiring keynote address. With the formal proceedings concluded, guests stepped out into the sunshine to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea on the Paddock – a perfect finale to mark the end of the academic year and celebrate the close of a definitive chapter for the Upper Sixth.
