On Tuesday, the Senior and Prep schools celebrated the start of term with our Epiphany service. Epiphany celebrates the arrival of the Wise Men to see the infant Jesus and is celebrated on January 6th, following 12th Night. Although we normally take our decorations down by the end of the 12 Days of Christmas, some of us leave them up until Candlemas on February 2nd, which marks the end of the Epiphany season. Following Christmas, Epiphany celebrates light coming into the darkness and marks stories in the Gospels where Jesus was revealed as the Son of God. It is the season we remember Jesus’ baptism, his presentation in the Temple, and the turning of the water into wine.
Pre-Prep learnt about how the French celebrate l’Épiphanie and la fête des rois (King’s Day), where a special cake called la galette is eaten. Year 3 pupils shared the traditional story “Roule Galette” in assembly with the rest of the school and parents. Pupils and parents then joined in a parade around the playground wearing the crowns, which the children had decorated themselves, to represent the journey of the Three Kings.
The Friends of Kings then delighted everyone by gifting every pupil in the school with small bag of French sweets.
