One of our two Preparatory School General Knowledge teams battled through the season-long qualifying rounds from over 100 leading independent schools to reach the National Finals of the Junior Schools Challenge staged at the Hall School in Hampstead on Saturday. Competing against eight teams from across the UK, including the Perse School in Cambridge, Stewart Melville College in Edinburgh and King Edward School, Birmingham, not to mention the stifling heat, the boys did the school proud.
With two Year 6 pupils (Ethan O and Rahul S) and one Year 4 (Ethan M), alongside captain Arthur G (8W), the King’s side was by far the youngest team in the competition, but it acquitted itself very well. Travelling by train and underground to the London venue, the team used landmarks on the journey to test their general knowledge (“Which fictional detective lived at 221B Baker Street?”), before a quarter-final tie against the reigning champions, University College School.
Good knowledge was demonstrated, especially on F1 drivers and global sports venues, but the side was narrowly defeated, before securing a nail-biting 410-400 victory in the Shield semi-final against the hosts. Although defeated in the final, the King’s team impressed and the boys received many plaudits from the organisers and other competitors, for their knowledge, manners and demeanour.
Mr Williamson, a stalwart of King’s General Knowledge, and Mr Medhurst were hugely proud of the team’s showing and look forward to returning to the contest in September. Well done team!
