Year 4 visited Down House this week. Down House was the home of Charles Darwin; it is where he formulated his ideas on evolution over many years before writing his major work, On the Origin of Species. The pupils looked around an exhibition on his life and work, visited the gardens where he carried out many of his experiments, and took the “Sandwalk”, a circular loop where Darwin thought over and refined his theory before publication.
Throughout the day, they read passages from his major work, On the Origin of Species, and extracts from the diary he wrote while on his voyage to the Galapagos Islands aboard The Beagle. There was still time for some dressing up!
