On Saturday, some fortunate pupils from Years 7 and 8 had the wonderful opportunity to attend a performance of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. This charming theatre, located next to the renowned Globe, is the only candle-lit theatre in London, designed to recreate the experience of attending a performance during the Elizabethan era.

The play tells the enchanting story of four Athenian lovers—Hermia, Lysander, Helena, and Demetrius—who escape into a magical forest, where they become entangled in the whimsical schemes of fairies led by King Oberon and Queen Titania. Their quarrel over a changeling child, exacerbated by a love potion used by the mischievous Puck, leads to delightful chaos. The modern twist added to the production made it thoroughly enjoyable for all who attended!

This was a really memorable and enriching experience, and it will definitely help pupils develop a better understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare’s work. Several Year 8 pupils, who studied the play last year, said that seeing it performed live brought the story to life in a way that reading it in class never quite could. A big thank you to Mrs Cross and Mrs Rivers for their fantastic support in accompanying the pupils on the trip.
