Congratulations to Velvet Cap winner Charlie B (L5) who was awarded this honour ‘for representing my country by playing violin in the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain, Main Orchestra. I played some amazing repertoire such as Mussorgsky/Ravel ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ and Shostakovich Symphony 5 with inspirational conductors in first-class venues such as Bristol Beacon and Symphony Hall Birmingham. I studied conducting and even got the chance to direct the orchestra in a rehearsal which was incredible. I had great fun creating improvised compositions with other young musicians and made some brilliant friends. It was a truly transformative experience. I feel thrilled and honoured to have won this prestigious award’.
Charlie is looking forward to taking his violin further. ‘I am working hard learning the violin concerto and recital repertoire with my wonderful teacher, Mr Milone, at King’s. I am also pursuing my interests in singing, conducting and composition. I am looking forward to performing later this year with the English Schools Orchestra (to which Charlie has won a scholarship!) and Kent County Youth Orchestra. It will also be great fun to play Sam Hall’s music in the band for the King’s Senior School production of ‘Oh What A Lovely War!’ And after he leaves school? ‘I intend to study violin at a major Conservatoire before becoming a professional violinist’.
