Pupils in Year 7 undertook the second of the year’s Enquiry Days focussing on issues of global health. The timetable was collapsed and lessons were structured around the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Working in teams, pupils examined health inequalities, considering both diseases of affluence and diseases of poverty, as well as addressing the barriers to good health in low-income countries.
A STEM challenge was led by Mr Wilton, the Head of Science, and Mrs Heddershaw, the Head of Years 7 and 8, involving pupils constructing a hand washing device to stop the spread of germs and a campaign to educate children in Kenya about the importance of sanitation. Pupils worked collaboratively and look to problem-solve, developing the Competencies which underpin the curriculum.
As part of the focus on disease in the high-income countries members of the group undertook CPR training with Mrs Waite, our First Aid Trainer, using resources supplied by the British Heart Foundation.
Pupils greatly enjoyed the opportunity to consider “real world” problems and offered thoughtful commentaries and imaginative solutions to these challenges as part of this innovative programme.
