Last week, Year 8 pupils traded screens for scenery as they embraced a week of outdoor adventure, personal growth and team spirit in the stunning surroundings of the Peak District.
Throughout the week, pupils were immersed in the natural world, pushing their boundaries and discovering strengths they didn’t know they had. Many faced fears head-on and rose to challenges they once thought were beyond them. From abseiling and rock climbing to weaselling, navigating unfamiliar trails and even braving the most extreme rides at Alton Towers, each day brought new and exciting opportunities for growth.
What made the week truly special, however, was what they left behind: their phones. With no internet or technology, pupils connected not through screens but through shared experiences. Remarkably, not a single complaint was heard about the lack of devices. Instead, the children conversed and made genuine connections. The coach—often a quiet zone of scrolling—was alive with chatter and joy, a welcome reminder of the simple pleasures of childhood.
As the days unfolded, so did powerful life lessons. Pupils learned the importance of supporting one another, respecting their environment and working together as a team. They took ownership of their surroundings, keeping both personal and communal areas clean—often without being asked. On the final morning, many were found hoovering rooms and cleaning bathrooms before breakfast, entirely on their own initiative.
Resilience, empathy and independence were nurtured in abundance over the course of the trip. The experience not only forged new friendships and unforgettable memories but also helped shape the pupils into more thoughtful, capable young people.
It was, in every sense, an exceptional week.
