Following last year’s workshop success, where our pupils reflected on how languages were used in careers in the field of professional sports (finance, nutrition, coaching, advertising, among others), this year saw a selection of Upper Fifths attending a British Council online workshop, listening to a range of speakers discussing how languages play a key role in their jobs.

“Laura,” having studied Spanish and French at school, now works for GCHQ and uses a multitude of languages on a daily basis as part of her work as an analyst (we think – although she could not discuss exactly what she does!). Eddy, a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army, explained how his deployments as a Defence Attaché in France, Mali and Germany led him to develop not only linguistic skills, but a range of soft skills (problem-solving, teamwork, organisation) and cultural awareness. Finally, Sian presented her experience living abroad (Spain and Germany) as part of her university studies.

King’s pupils were then encouraged to investigate connections between languages and careers in a variety of fields and consider their next steps in their studies: which language will they choose as part of their A Levels? What is the language provision like at the university they are considering? What languages will they learn in the future?

So many choices, so many opportunities!
