Pupils in Year 7 completed the second of their Enquiry Days focussing on global health. Using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as their lens, pupils examined health inequalities across the globe and the progress that has been achieved in eradicating disease.
Across the three days, pupils developed not only their understanding, but they looked to develop the competencies that underpin the curriculum. Working in teams to develop their collaborative skills, pupils devised their hand-washing device to show how good sanitation can reduce communicable diseases by stopping the spread of germs. The challenge here was to use a few simple resources to design and then manufacture their own device, problem-solving by applying critical thinking to provide a solution.
Day Two focussed on diseases of poverty and diseases of affluence. Pupils examined the work that has been undertaken to reduce the impact of malaria, before undertaking CPR training with Mrs Waite as the pupils learned vital skills to increase survival rates from cardiac arrests.
The final morning saw pupils working in groups to produce digital presentations on the theme of threats to global health. Researching topics such as vaccine hesitancy, poor access to medical care and Ebola the teams worked collaboratively against the clock, using their digital skills to compile a five-minute video. At the end of the day the judges determined that the best presentation was on global influenza and Aarin, Florence, Harry, Isabella and Jotham are to be commended for their work.
