Year 2 had an exciting and action-packed day taking part in their Great Fire of London workshop!
The day began with a fun introduction, where the children learnt many interesting facts on this famous historical event.
Next, the children stepped back in time and brought history to life. In small groups, they acted out the key moments of the Great Fire and created “freeze frame” scenes to show each event. They then worked together to place the events in the correct chronological order using a Thinking Frame, helping them to visually organise and explain their ideas. It was wonderful to see just how creative and imaginative they were!
After break, the children rotated around three exciting activities:
✒️ Quill Writing – The children used real quills to write just like Samuel Pepys, whose diary helped us learn about the Great Fire.
🧀 Samuel’s Stash – The children went on a treasure hunt around the school to find the cheese and wine that Samuel Pepys famously buried to keep them safe from the fire!
🎨 Painting – They created beautiful painted backgrounds ready for their Great Fire of London collages.
In the afternoon, the children designed colourful collages of London in 1666, complete with dramatic flames spreading through the buildings.
They had fun outside chain ganging! The children formed teams and practised passing buckets of water along a line into a large container, just like the firefighters would have done in 1666. They showed fantastic teamwork and determination!
Year 2 performed “London’s Burning”, singing confidently in canon (rounds). It was a brilliant way to experience a fun-filled day of history, creativity and teamwork.
Year 2 should be very proud of their enthusiasm and participation throughout the workshop!
