The MCC batted first on an easy-paced Paddock wicket and despite some disciplined new ball bowling from Dandeniya and Ford, they made it to lunch unscathed. Post lunch, the MCC batters, Denny and Clifton, began to put the pressure on. The King’s change bowlers and the breakthrough finally came when Clifton was caught, brilliantly, by Darby off the bowling of Milgate. Another wicket from Milgate and the retirement of centurion Denny saw the MCC declare on 232/3.
King’s had a difficult period of batting to negotiate before tea which Leigh and Barnard dealt with positively, their opening stand of 35 got the school off to a good start. Leigh continued his fine run of form before being dismissed for 47. Dandeniya, Lincoln and captain Taylor, all made 30’s to put the school in a winning position at 168/5 before Taylor was out caught. A flurry of wickets saw King’s holding on for a draw, 8 wickets down, with two Lower Fifth’s in Darby and Milgate at the crease for the final 10 overs of the day. The final over was seen off by Milgate (5 from 36 balls) with the school 9 down and the pavilion cheering as we rescued a draw.
The 1st XI put on a brilliant display, showing a lot of character against an excellent MCC side, demonstrating the progress the young team are making. I would like to extend my thanks to the ground staff for an excellent pitch, the umpires and scorers for their officiating and to the catering team for their wonderful hospitality.
