Lower Fifth French pupils attended a live conference delivered by the University of Lancaster and the Institut Français on Tuesday 19 March.

The topic was ‘The Olympic Games – history and symbolism.’ The conference was entirely in French, and pupils learned some key symbols and differences in the forthcoming Jeux Olympiques (2024 Summer Games) in Paris. For example, the Olympic Torch is designed with a smooth side to represent harmony and good organisation and a wavy side to depict water. This is an homage to the river Seine, the setting for the Opening Ceremony this year. It is unusual for the opening ceremony not to take place at a stadium and this year, boats with athletes will glide up the Seine.
