Lord Mackinlay of Richborough returned to King’s to deliver the final Zetountes Lecture of the term. Having spoken to a captivated audience of Senior School pupils earlier in the year, about his career in politics, at the same time revealing his tremendous courage in his recovery from sepsis, on this occasion Craig Mackinlay spoke on net-zero.

With a background in zoology, Lord Mackinlay questioned some of the science around climate change. Founder of the Net Zero Scrutiny Group of Peers and MPs, he offered an alternative perspective on the case for zero carbon, pointing to the costs of this transition and suggesting that the use of renewable energy sources is often problematic.

Fielding questions from the Scholars, pupils enjoyed the opportunity to challenge the peer’s views, as he prompted the audience to consider “If everybody is thinking the same, nobody is thinking”. Thanks were offered at the close of the talk, while Lord Mackinlay stayed on long after the formal conclusion, to discuss current political issues with Sixth Formers and pupils studying politics.
