The legacy of Greek language and literature to Western civilisation is immense. Over the course of two years we cover from scratch all the language and vocabulary needed for GCSE; in addition to which, we expose our pupils to some of the oldest and most influential European literature.

Our approach combines considerable linguistic rigour and a broadening of the mind through the exploration of the literature. The classes are small and this enables pupils to explore more deeply and more widely the questions which come up.

Assessment is carried out in three written papers:

  • Language Paper: Involving unseen translation of Greek prose
  • Literature Paper: Involving an appreciation and understanding of a verse set text, a passage from Homer
  • Literature & Culture Paper: Involving a study in English of aspects of Ancient Greek life and society

Examination Board: OCR
Specification: J292
